The first LP, "Manifest Destiny" was originally released in 1983, and remastered and re-released in 2018. This album introduced listeners to the band's signature sound. With a mix of ethereal synthesizer sounds, heavy guitar riffs and melodic vocals, it set the stage for what was to come.

Key Tracks

  • "Tell me Why": Their first hit, reached number 37 in Billboards top 100. Features clean electric guitar, bass and drums. A relatively simple and straight forward song about the loss of love.

  • "The Wall of Shame": A fan favorite, this song combines some odd time signatures, time signature changes, and showcases Noel's incredible guitar work on both acoustic and electric guitars.

The production quality of "Manifest Destiny" was impressive for a debut album. The band worked hard to create a polished sound that resonated with fans.

Growth and Change: "Worlds Collide"

In 1985, Interphase released their second LP, "Worlds Collide", which was remastered and re-released in 2018. This album marked a shift in their musical style. While fans responded well to their initial offering, the record company felt that Interphase should embrace a more poppish sound with shorter (3-5 minute tracks) targeting syndicated radio than the longer more progressive album oriented sounds that were more reminiscent of the late 60s and early 70s. So the band experimented with new sounds and themes, showcasing a more commercial 'Industrial rock" sound.

Notable Songs

  • "Worlds Collide": The title track, thought to possibly be a hit, with an unusual entry beat. Having all the earmarks of a hit, "Worlds Collide" did not do as well as thought.

  • "The Chosen Ones": All the members, being big fans of Star Trek, and the space program and space exploration in general, this was their ode to that industry.

While "Worlds Collide" received critical acclaim. And while some fans appreciated the band's willingness to take risks and explore new territory, the album didn't fare so well in sales.

Back to What We do Best: "Mysteries of the Unexplained"

In 1986, Interphase took a bold step and came back to what they do best - solid progressive rock - with their third album "Mysteries of the Unexplained", released in 1986, and remastered and re-released in 2018. When a band truly "feels" the music they play, it comes through to the fans. 'Mysteries" was their most successful album, the top favorite of their fans, and even produced two hits "Hot Times" and "The Fire of Love".

Highlighted Tracks

  • "Mysteries of the Unexplained": The title track involves some of the most intricate time signatures and time signature changes in progressive rock. The associated video was actually just recently released (May 6, 2025) and involves over 35 years of actual footage of everything from ghosts, orbs, and UFO phenomena set to the mysterious chord progressions and beat changes of the music.

  • "The Jersey Devil": A true 20 minute story set to music that is eerie, ethereal, wild, and bombastic in its different areas expressing the emotions of the protagonist. The piece involves several time signature changes, odd time signatures, strange chord and key progressions, that adds up to some of the most amazing musicianship in all of progressive rock.

"Mysteries of the Unexplained" was a turning point for Interphase. It solidified their place in the music industry and attracted new fans. And to this day remains the number 1 favorite of their fan base.

In 1988, Interphase released their fourth LP, "Masters of the Obvious" that includes their hit single "It's Only Rock and Roll". This album was re-mastered and re-released in 2018. This album is a reflection on how life is in the world back then AND today, and how it is affected by society, the media, and world changing events. The songs are more an observation on what is happening in our world. Interesting how it has prophetically continued to be relevant across the years.

Essential Tracks

  • "Masters of the Obvious": Title track, and what many have said is prophetic of our times even in 2025. It spoke even then of fake news and revisionist history. Musically, it ebbs and flows between hyper and calm, with several time signature changes and a rather radical 11/8 time signature toward the middle showing the musical dexterity of the trio.

  • "Dreamstreet Cafe": A fan favorite, and a peek into the everyday lives of the common business man and woman. The words, written by James was inspired by his observations of a little cafe just off of Wall St. in New York at about 5:00 PM when the stock market lets out. It's a bluesy song with ethereal synthesizers, and plucky but clean guitar riffs, showing Noel's adaptation to a beautiful blues type piece.

"Masters of the Obvious" resonated with fans on a deeper level. The vulnerability in the life of the listener comes through with clarity, and causes one to fall in love with this album.

Standout Songs

  • "The opening salvo of "Hot Times/Mysteries of the Unexplained/Spastic Silhouette": This track opens the show with the promise of stellar guitars, wild drums, unique keyboard sounds and virtuosic bass. It brings amazing energy to the crowd that never lets up until the end.

Essential Tracks

  • "The Wall of Shame": Showcasing the amazing talents of Noel as a world class guitar virtuoso.

  • "Manifest Destiny": Showcasing both Danny Brand on the bass and a world-class drum solo by James.

  • "The Heart of Cain": The closing piece leaving the crowd wanting more. Showcases Noel on the guitar synthesizer dueling with James on the drums. Just when you think the energy is about to trail off, this piece wraps up the concert by pushing the energy over the top.
