In the Beginning: The Formation of Interphase
Progressive rock has always been a genre that pushes boundaries. It combines intricate musical compositions with thought-provoking lyrics. Among the many bands that have emerged in this genre, one of the bands that stands out is the prog-rock power trio: Interphase. This critically acclaimed super group has made waves with their unique sound and captivating performances.
Here we will explore the journey of Interphase, their musical style, and what makes them a must-listen for any progressive rock fan.

The band started when Noel approached James who was playing in a jazz band. Noel was impressed with the intricate beats and fills that James brought to the jazz genre, and asked if James would be interested in playing prog-rock. James who had always loved prog-rock jumped at the chance. Together, they searched for a bass player, and settled on Danny, a blues style bassist, who rose to the occasion of prog-rock.
Musical Influences
Interphase has drawn inspiration from a variety of artists. They blend classic progressive rock with modern elements, classical, and jazz. Some of their biggest influences include:
-
Pink Floyd: Known for their atmospheric soundscapes and deep lyrics.
-
Kansas: Famous for their complex compositions and musicianship.
-
Emerson Lake and Palmer: Recognized for their complexity, with classical and jazz influences.
These influences can be heard in their music. Interphase combines intricate guitar riffs, powerful bass lines, ethereal synthesizer fills, and dynamic drumming to create a sound that is both familiar and fresh.
The Sound of Interphase
What sets Interphase apart is their ability to blend different styles within progressive rock. Their music features:
-
Complex Time Signatures: They often experiment with unusual time signatures, creating a unique rhythmic feel.
-
Layered Instrumentation: Each song is rich with layers, allowing listeners to discover new elements with each listen.
-
Thoughtful Lyrics: Their lyrics often explore themes of existence, nature, and the human experience.
One of their standout tracks, "Masters of the Obvious" showcases these elements beautifully. The song begins with a rigorous and complex interplay between drums, bass, and synthesizers, with beat and time signature changes at break-neck speeds. The piece settles into a piano with vocals that speak to the times we live in. The lyrics invite listeners to reflect on their place in society and the influence of media.
Live Performances
Interphase is known for their electrifying live performances. They have played at various venues, from small theaters to larger festivals and arenas. Each show is an experience, filled with energy and passion.
During their performances, the band interacts with the audience. They encourage fans to sing along and share their thoughts on the music. This connection creates a sense of community among fans. The Interphase album "Stages" accurately captures their performance in front of about 20,000 fans at the Melkweg arena in Amsterdam recorded during their "Masters of the Obvious World tour" in 1989.
Their stage presence is magnetic. Noel's guitar solos often leave the crowd in awe, while Danny's bass lines keep everyone moving. James's drumming adds a powerful backbone to their sound, driving the energy of the performance.
The Creative Process
The songwriting process for Interphase is collaborative. Noel once likened it to making donuts. Noel mostly came up with the melodies (mixed the dough), James comes up with the arrangements (Bakes the dough), and Danny added the extras and effects (sprinkled and added the toppings).
Usually Noel would start with a basic idea, often a riff or a melody. James (who also plays keyboards but not in concert) had the ability to hear all other instruments behind the melody and would put together the arrangements. From there, Danny would add special effects and many of the background synthesizer and bass work. James is mostly the wordsmith for all the lyrics.
For example, their song "Presence Among Us" began as a simple acoustic guitar riff. Over time, it evolved into a complex piece with multiple sections and dynamic shifts. The final product showcases their growth as musicians and songwriters.
One particular master piece of music that is lauded as "Epic" by many of their peers and critics alike, and is a "must listen" for all avid prog-rock fans is their 20 minute tour de force "The Jersey Devil". An original concept by James, after reading a book about the same, and put to music. It opens with thunder, and a bit of a horror music like piano that builds and runs into a hard hitting guitar piece with a 7/8 time signature. Finally it settles into more of a jazz type progression where Noel sings about the birth of the devil which leads into a chaotic piece in 5/4 time signature, where 3 musicians sound more like a 6 piece band. This then settles into the ethereal "Passage through Time" with the ticking of a watch. Then in present day, the protagonist goes in hunt of the devil, only to find it is he who is being hunted, and narrowly escapes with his life, leading to the bombastic ending featuring James on the drums and gongs.
The Future of Interphase
Interphase unfortunately lost Danny on March 1, 2019 to complications due to an auto accident. Noel has had ongoing health issues and is no longer capable of touring and playing. James is still quite healthy, and is continuing with the Interphase name, and is seeking some musicians to continue making albums and touring. As James also plays keyboards, he is continuing to write and compose music. James is currently working on the sixth album under the Interphase name, which is set to be released next year. This album will feature new material that showcases musical evolution as James is bringing a bit more of a Jazz/Prog-rock fusion to the new LP.
James also plans to tour extensively with the new lineup, to promote the new album as well as many of the pieces from the first five LPs. Fans can expect to see them at various music festivals and venues around the world.
Interphase is committed to pushing the boundaries of progressive rock. They want to create music that resonates with listeners and inspires them.
